Create discussion stations, or chat stations, for students to rotate through and discuss various topics related to the text. Students can be asked to respond to a different question, quotation, or image from the book at each station. Divide the class into small groups, one for each station, and give them time to discuss or respond to the prompt. When time is up, groups rotate to the next station. This process continues until groups have spent time at all stations. This activity can be used to prepare for a whole-class discussion or individual writing. You can learn more about chat stations here (Links to an external site.).

This activity can be modified so that students engage in Chalk Talk (Links to an external site.) silent conversations at each station, with new groups adding to the thinking left by previous groups. This can be followed by a gallery walk (Links to an external site.) or whole-class discussion.
