Ron and Ben Whiteowl find an old flare gun in their grandmother’s garage and decide to take it to the local dump and try it out. They meet up with their classmates and hockey teammates, Michael and Jason, who are at the gas bar on the Agamiing Reserve trying to buy cigarettes while under age.  When Michael is turned away empty-handed, he becomes enraged.  Ron and Ben invite them to join them at the dump.

When the gas bar burns that night, Michael—who happens to be the sheriff’s son—falsely accuses Ron and Ben of setting the fire. As the investigation continues and gossip runs rampant, racist attitudes within the police force and the larger community is exposed.
