In her foreword to This Place: 150 Years Retold Alicia Elliott writes, “But just because stories are unwritten for a time, it doesn’t mean that they’ll be unwritten forever. And just because stories don’t get written down, it doesn’t mean they’re ever lost. We carry them in our minds, our hearts, our very bones. We honour them by passing them on, letting them live on in others, too.”
This Place: 150 Years Retold is a graphic novel anthology comprising ten stories from different regions and time periods, each portraying a particular moment in Indigenous history throughout the 150 years since Confederation. The stories progress chronologically and are introduced with a brief essay by the writer and timeline that places it in context.
Every selection is unique in its storytelling and style, creating a cohesive collection that offers readers a compelling range of voices and stunning artwork. In Elliott’s words, “It tells tales of resistance, of leadership, of wonder and pain, of pasts we must remember and futures we must keep striving towards, planting each story like a seed deep inside of us.”
